We
would like to welcome you to the Sierra Club Naturecoast Group; serving
Citrus, Hernando, Pascoand
Sumter Counties.
The
high ideals of the Sierra Club, founded in 1892, continue to be entrenched
in our outreach to the public.
Our
mission is to “Explore, enjoy and protect the Planet”.
Our Nature Coast region includes some of the most beautiful,
natural areas remaining on the West Central
Coast of Florida. This natural jewel is being attacked on numerous fronts by
developers,
local city and county leaders, the Fl. Dept.
of Transportation, and large energy producers like Progress Energy. The
environment is
and will be the victim of irreversible
destruction if citizens continue the couch potato position. This destruction
occurs daily
at an unprecedented pace. Together, this
trend must be reversed.
We
continue to challenge the possible. Together we can make a difference for ourselves and for
generations to come.

If not you,
then WHO? If not NOW,
then WHEN?
There is no shortage of issues needing to be addressed; clean water,
endangered plant and animal species,
habitat
destruction, preservation of wetlands and upland sand hills, alternative
energy, clear cutting of forests, the aquifer,
fuel efficiency, mass transportation, highway
construction and the ever-present developers advancing sprawl, to name just
a few.
All of these issues require “green” solutions
if we are to sustain a healthy environment.

At
the present time, our group does not have a certified Outings Leader.
There is however training available through National Sierra that can bring
a member to qualification for the position. We most sincerely look forward
to a member of our Group filling this position in the near future. There
are many outstanding rewards to this position. Please contact our Chair or
Webmaster for further information on
There are many great locals that we can explore together throughout our 4
county region. One very important ingredient is input from you. Many of
our members have not been out of their own counties for quite a while so a
suggestion from other members on interesting spots near their homes in
their counties could very well spur great interest for a group outing.
General Information about Outings:
Please bring
appropriate protective clothing, bug spray, sunscreen, and water. Hikes
can be easy, moderate or strenuous for the regular hiker. Please be sure
you are able to hike the distance specified in event notice. If all you
need is maybe a walking stick to assist in order to join the hike, let us
know and perhaps we can locate one for you.
If there are any medical needs please notify Leader before the date of the outing.

This was a wonderful day at M&B Products, a local dairy in
Citrus County. Much was learned and all had a fantastic time.
We even had close-up shots with the dairy cows!
Full boat headed down the Homosassa River for an
educational tour of local
wildlife. Later, a stop at the
Homosassa River Wildlife
Preserve to check out the manatees.
