The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (has released a
report, Wildlife 2060: What’s at Stake for Florida, which explores the
status of wildlife 50 years from now if the human population doubles to
36 million as predicted. Many natural areas and species could be
significantly reduced. Climate change, in addition to development, could
further exacerbate loss of habitat to support wildlife.
Wendy Quigley, outreach coordinator, will discuss the FWC report at the
Oct. 9 general meeting and how there could be a better outcome for
people and wildlife than currently predicted. The report highlights
positive actions by individuals, government workers, volunteer
organizations and communities who have improved habitat and helped
Florida’s species. The FWC hopes the report motivates decision makers to
manage growth more wisely and inspires Floridians to get involved to
preserve the state’s diverse wildlife and habitats.
